According to Science World Report, handbags can be the site of 10 times more microbial activity than a toilet seat. It's estimated that about 10,000 bacteria can be found on a few square centimetres of your bag. How many times do you clean your handbag properly? Imagine how many germs it might be harbouring.

To clean your handbags, first wash your hands, then wipe the bags with alcohol-free wipes. Empty your bag, turn it upside down and shake it out, then use a brush or lint roller to grab more resistant crumbs.

Be mindful of where you place your bag. Avoid leaving it on the floor (especially in bathrooms). Store your bag in the dust bag it came in or a pillowcase, to protect it and avoid cross-contamination.

Clean your hands before grabbing things out of your bag, especially if you have been touching lots of different surfaces or have been in public places such as buses.

Finally, to make your bag extra tidy, create homemade baking-soda sachets and keep them in your bag to get rid of any unpleasant odours.
