Here are five tips for working more pattern into your home.
• People are quite nervous about combining prints, but it’s all about the layering. I love having three or four patterns together, without clashing or being too matchy-matchy.
• The most important thing to consider is scale. I tend to use a small-scale print with a large-scale one. Never put two very big prints together – that will give you a headache.
• Play with tones. Keep your colour palette tight, but work wildly within it. I mix and match anything I love in the same colour range.
• I like to have a dark-coloured item in a room to anchor the space, which will then support layers of pattern to make it visually stable.
• I also like to keep the basics of a room as simple as possible. I usually have quite neutral-coloured walls and sofas, then add layers of colour, texture and pattern with rugs, cushions and lampshades. That way, you can easily change things around if and when you get bored.
