The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department, concluded its summer training program for students of Qatar University (QU) and University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST), with the participation of 30 male and female students, as part of its efforts to support national capacity building, qualify young talents, and enhance their contribution to the sustainable development process. The Ministry of Environment said in a statement Sunday that the training program extended over nine weeks for UDST students, and six weeks for QU students to develop students’ knowledge of modern concepts of environmental sustainability, and introduce them to the most prominent strategic initiatives and projects implemented by the Ministry in the areas of green development, environmental protection, and natural resource management.The Ministry of Environment indicated that the program, during its activities in the first and second weeks, focused on linking the academic aspect with practical and field applications, enabling students to directly learn about the specializations of the various departments in the ministry, which contributes to refining their skills and preparing qualified national cadres capable of supporting national efforts in the fields of environmental protection and sustainability.The ministry explained that the program began for UDST students by receiving them in the Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department, which took over the supervision of the implementation of the program and coordination with the relevant departments, allowing the students the opportunity to learn about the ministry’s specializations and gain scientific and practical experiences through specialized lectures, field visits, and practical applications. During the program, UDST students participated in training programs in cooperation with the Radiation Protection Department and Green Development and Environmental Sustainability Department, where they learned the fundamentals of radiation protection, radiation safety requirements, safe uses of radiation technologies, and radiation monitoring and inspection.The students were also briefed on the ministry's efforts in sustainability, circular economy, green finance, biodiversity, and the role of modern technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting environmental work.QU students also began their training program in green development management and environmental sustainability, where they learned about sustainability concepts, the circular economy, and related national initiatives, and presented applied projects that promote innovation in finding sustainable environmental solutions.The students continued their training in the Environmental Assessment and Permit Department, where they learned about environmental impact assessment procedures and the issuance of environmental permits, efforts to protect the marine environment and preserve biodiversity, and topics related to environmental pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and renewable energy projects. The ministry affirmed that the program comes within the framework of its ongoing commitment to developing national talent and enhancing cooperation with academic institutions, contributing to the preparation of young cadres capable of supporting the path of sustainable development and protecting the environment in the State of Qatar.

With the focus of grooming a new generation of healthcare leaders in the country and the region, the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST)’s College of Business, in collaboration with the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, has launched a new executive master’s programme. The new Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA) was launched Monday at an event on the university premises. The event was attended by Ministry of Public Health director (Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Programmes) Sheikh Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al-Thani, World Health Organisation country director Dr Rayana Ahmad Bou Haka, UDST president Dr Salem al-Naemi, and academic leaders, decision-makers, healthcare experts, and professionals. Officials from leading public and private healthcare facilities in the country were also present on the occasion. Dr al-Naemi told Gulf Times that the programme aims to groom the healthcare professionals to executive leaders. “This programme helps to groom the skills of healthcare professionals such as nurses and doctors to become leaders in their field,” he said. “This will help in advancing the skills of these professionals. Initially, we will be admitting around 20 candidates for the programme, and later the number might go up.” Bachelor’s degree holders with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and with five years of full-time professional experience are eligible to apply for the programme. Applications for the inaugural cohort of the programme are now open, with the programme set to welcome its first group of students in the upcoming academic cycle. Dr Vincent Mangematin, the dean of the UDST’s College of Business, emphasised the significance of the partnership and the programme’s contribution to Qatar’s healthcare ecosystem. “Here in Qatar, we are witnessing a healthcare sector that is flourishing, deeply dynamic and rapidly evolving,” he said. “Our nation benefits from state-of-the-art equipment, world-class medical installations and highly qualified medical and paramedical teams.” “The launch of the Executive Master of Health Administration reflects our commitment to developing highly skilled leaders capable of advancing healthcare systems and driving innovation across the sector,” Mangematin continued. “Through our partnership with the University of Ottawa, we are providing healthcare professionals with access to world-class education that supports Qatar’s national priorities and strengthens the future of healthcare management.” The Executive Master of Health Administration combines academic excellence with practical, industry-focused learning, equipping experienced healthcare professionals with the strategic, leadership, and system-level capabilities needed to lead change in complex healthcare environments. University of Ottawa vice-dean (Graduate Professional Programmes) Dr Greg Richards highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing emerging healthcare challenges and preparing leaders to navigate an increasingly complex healthcare landscape. “We take a great deal of pride in graduating students who make a difference,” he said. “Many of our graduates have gone on to become chief executive officers and senior leaders in healthcare institutions across Canada.” Graduates of the programme will earn dual degrees from the University of Ottawa and UDST, providing them with internationally recognised credentials and a global perspective on healthcare leadership.

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) is implementing the vision of the country for a sustainable future making use of applied research in several areas, the president of the university, Dr Salem al-Naemi, told 'Gulf Times'. “Our focus is on sustainability and it is part of our strategy. With our research focus, our aim is to make sure that we are economically sustainable as a university and thereby we are actually implementing the vision of our nation,” said Dr al-Naemi.The UDST president was interacting with 'Gulf Times' on the sidelines of press conference to announce the university’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. He said that UDST is making use of solar energy in a big way and three of the facilities of the university are running on solar energy.“We have three facilities that are making use of solar energy completely. We have one building, and a metro station that works totally on solar. We have also a recycle unit which works totally on solar. These were developed by our students and faculty. We have done these things within the last three years. With the Qatar Vision 2030, we are really pushing to be sustainable and scalable,” he noted.The UDST president said that the university has taken this initiative to transform the idea of sustainability into a bigger scale and therefore the initiative to transform the whole campus to be carbon neutral. “So we are actually going to implement this project. It will be a great model, not only for our students, our researchers, our faculty but for our community and beyond,” he pointed out.The official said that there will be great involvement of students and the faculty in the entire phases of the project. He stated: “I think this one is an excellent opportunity for our students and our researchers to really make use the campus at large as a site of research. So they will have the opportunity to research the challenges that we are facing today. Whatever technology you are using, there is always scope for improvement and the students and the faculty will benefit out of that. So they will be hopefully doing some research and will be innovators for the future.”Dr al-Naemi said that the project for the implementation of carbon neutral strategy has already begun and will be completed on time. “We are applying for the licence from Kahramaa. The first phase will be implemented in one of the parking lots as a proof concept to really scale it up for the whole campus,” he added. 

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has embarked on an ambitious programme to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 in partnership with Mannai Energy, probably making the university the first campus in Qatar to achieve the feat. Dr Salem al-Naemi, president of UDST announced the strategy Tuesday at a press conference along with Khalid Ahmad al-Mannai, vice-chairman, Executive Committee, Mannai Corporation. The event was attended by a number of dignitaries and representatives from UDST and Mannai Corporation. As part of the strategy, the university signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mannai Energy to support efforts in improving energy efficiency and developing sustainable infrastructure. Dr al-Naemi said: “Achieving carbon neutrality is one of our key strategic priorities. We are committed to integrating sustainability principles across all our academic and operational activities, reflecting our role as a leading applied university preparing a generation capable of developing sustainable solutions. Collaborating with industry partners such as Mannai Energy is essential to accelerating this transition, enabling us to translate our ambitions into tangible, real-world impact.” The collaboration includes establishing a clear roadmap toward carbon neutrality, with defined timelines and measurable performance indicators, in addition to assessing campus energy consumption and emissions, developing environmental performance metrics, exploring photovoltaic solar energy opportunities, enhancing building and facility efficiency, and supporting the transition toward sustainable mobility solutions, including electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the evaluation of fleet electrification. “Mannai Energy is proud to support UDST on its Net Zero journey. This collaboration aligns with our focus on enabling low‑carbon energy solutions and supporting institutions in developing practical, future‑ready decarbonisation strategies. Together, we aim to contribute to Qatar’s broader sustainability and energy transition goals,” al-Mannai noted. Driven by this strategic objective, UDST adopts an integrated approach focused on enhancing energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable energy sources, and developing innovative sustainable mobility solutions, while promoting environmental awareness among students, faculty, and staff. It also aims to strengthen its position as a living applied platform for sustainability by transforming its campus into a holistic model for clean energy, bridging applied education with real-world practices. This is in line with UDST’s commitment to supporting national priorities in environmental protection and sustainable development. As the first applied university in Qatar, UDST is reinforcing its leadership role in adopting energy sustainability practices through a comprehensive institutional approach that extends beyond individual initiatives. “We are under 100% ownership of the Mannai Corporation. We are working with UDST in terms of developing a net zero carbon journey. As part of that, we start with the solar energy. Then we go into EV. When it comes to EV, it is both EV vehicles as well as EV charging infrastructure,” Abhay Rajan. general manager of the Mannai Energy Group told ‘Gulf Times’. The university also places strong emphasis on promoting a culture of sustainability within its academic and administrative community through awareness programs, workshops, and educational initiatives aimed at empowering students, faculty, and staff to actively contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. 

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has announced the signing of a technology support contract with “Be My Sense”, a startup founded by UDST students and launched through the university’s incubation centre, UHUB. The agreement marks a significant step in supporting student-led innovation and advancing entrepreneurial initiatives emerging from the university. “Be My Sense” was developed by students Mohamed Ali and Ahmed El Abed, under the mentorship of Dr Wagdi Alrawagfeh, the assistant dean for IT Student Affairs at the College of Computing and Information Technology. The startup builds on an award-winning project that earned international recognition at the Huawei ICT Competition 2024-25 Global Final in China, where the team secured second place in the Innovation Track while representing Qatar among leading teams from around the world. The solution is an inclusive, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered platform designed to empower deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals through real-time translation, smart wearables, and digital assistance. By addressing communication barriers in educational, professional, and public environments, “Be My Sense” reflects a strong commitment to accessibility and social impact. The contract establishes a framework for collaboration between the UDST and the startup, focusing on supporting its continued development, scalability, and market readiness. “The signing of this contract reflects our strong commitment to empowering our students and supporting their entrepreneurial journeys,” said UDST president Dr Salem al-Naemi. “At the UDST, we believe that innovation thrives when students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.” “‘Be My Sense’ is a testament to the impact of applied learning, where ideas developed in the classroom evolve into solutions that serve society and address real challenges,” he said. “We take great pride in seeing our students grow into innovators and entrepreneurs who contribute to shaping a more inclusive and technologically advanced future.” “The signing of this contract is a major milestone for us as a startup,” said “Be My Sense” co-founder and chief technology officer Mohamed Ali. “What began as a university project has evolved into a solution with real-world impact, thanks to the continuous support and guidance we received at the UDST. The hands-on learning experience played a crucial role in helping us develop our idea and prepare it for the next stage.” 

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) hosted the Intellectual Wellness and Research Excellence Forum (IWRE) as part of its strategic commitment to strengthening an integrated research culture and embedding holistic wellness across its academic environment. The forum serves as a key platform to showcase ongoing and completed research, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and highlight the role of research in advancing the University’s institutional priorities. The forum aligns with UDST’s Wellness Strategy, which adopts a comprehensive approach linking academic performance with overall well-being, and emphasises intellectual wellness as a core pillar. This includes encouraging engagement in creative and mentally stimulating activities, promoting curiosity and lifelong learning, and enabling knowledge exchange across the academic community. In this context, research at UDST is viewed not only as an academic outcome, but as a powerful mechanism for supporting intellectual wellness, strengthening critical thinking, and enabling interdisciplinary dialogue, contributing to a dynamic and innovation-driven learning environment. Among the research presented, a study examined the impact of an integrated wellness intervention designed for first-year students, aimed at enhancing health literacy, increasing wellness awareness, and promoting healthier behaviours during the transition into university life. The intervention combined structured wellness education within a first-year academic course with individualised coaching based on an eight-dimensional wellness framework, covering physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and financial well-being. The study demonstrated measurable improvements among participating students, including increased health literacy levels and significant gains across multiple domains of health-promoting behaviours such as nutrition, stress management, and health responsibility. Students also reported a stronger understanding of wellness concepts, greater awareness of the link between health and academic performance, and improved ability to adopt more balanced daily habits. The findings further highlighted the impact of personalised coaching in achieving stronger outcomes, underscoring the importance of tailored support within a comprehensive wellness framework. Commenting on the initiative, Dr Salem Al-Naemi, President of UDST said: “The IWRE Forum reflects UDST’s commitment to integrating research within its institutional wellness framework, enhancing the quality of the academic experience and supporting student success. Through this holistic approach, we continue to advance an academic environment that promotes innovation, encourages knowledge exchange, and delivers meaningful impact within the University and beyond.” The forum provides an interactive platform for faculty to present their research, exchange ideas, and explore collaborative opportunities across disciplines, reinforcing UDST’s position as a leading hub for applied research and innovation. 

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has implemented a joint educational initiative with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST), targeting fourth-year Dental Hygiene students.Dr Najat Alyafei, the manager of Oral Health Promotion and Prevention at the PHCC, said that the initiative aims to support health education and strengthen national capacity in preventative care and was organised by the Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department in the Preventative Health Directorate in collaboration with the Academic Affairs Department within the PHCC’s Workforce Training and Development Directorate.The collaboration provided fourth-year Dental Hygiene students with a structured observership experience within the Asnani School Oral Health Programme, one of the PHCC’s flagship national preventative initiatives delivering oral health promotion services across public schools in Qatar.A total of 16 senior dental hygiene students participated in the observership, receiving structured exposure to Qatar’s school-based preventive oral health delivery model."The initiative aims to bridge academic education with real-world healthcare practice by exposing students to community-based preventive oral health delivery, multidisciplinary teamwork, and professional health communication within authentic school environments," Dr Alyafei said.The experience also highlighted the importance of culturally and linguistically appropriate health education materials when delivering preventive messages within Arabic governmental school settings.Under the supervision and mentorship of PHCC clinical teams, students gained practical insight into public health dentistry and preventive care models, strengthening their professional readiness and understanding of community health engagement.“We affirm that academic partnerships of this nature represent a fundamental pillar in developing national healthcare competencies and supporting the sustainability of prevention and health promotion services, in alignment with Qatar’s healthcare sector strategy and the PHCC’s vision of investing in the future health workforce,” Dr Alyafei said.
