RIYADH: Recently announced wildcard mechanisms for the inaugural Esports Nations Cup in Riyadh this November — solidarity slots, host region slots, and special invites — introduce structured pathways designed to expand global, nation-based esports competition, including representation opportunities for Gulf Cooperation Council member nations, according to the Esports Foundation.

The framework aims to address structural, technical and regional barriers that can limit access to international competitions, with the aim of ensuring broader global representation across the event through clearly defined, criteria-based pathways that align with the overall competitive structure, the foundation added.

Host nation slots are commonly used at international sporting events to ensure local representation and drive national fandom in the host country, and the Esports Nations Cup aims to establish a similar framework for its rotational hosting model. For this year’s event, however, the slot will be assigned to the host region instead of a host nation, the foundation said, to ensure representation among Gulf Cooperation Council member states through a merit-based system across all game titles. Slots will be awarded to the highest-performing Gulf nation that has not already earned a spot through existing qualification pathways.

Solidarity slots will provide a structured, performance-based pathway for underrepresented countries and territories to compete at the event, the foundation said. Available across all titles except Counter-Strike 2, they provide a unique opportunity for players from countries and territories with smaller esports footprints to be represented on the global stage, thereby making the event relevant to more fans worldwide, it added.

From July 20 until Aug. 17, countries and territories that have not already qualified for more than one title can apply to be considered for a solidarity slot in their strongest titles. The Esports Foundation and games publishers will award slots based on competitive strength and regional representation after all qualifiers conclude across all game titles.

Special invites address specific technical or structural limitations that might prevent participation in standard qualification systems, the foundation said. They apply only to selected titles and defined scenarios, will not be performance-based and will be awarded based on eligibility criteria aligned with game partner ecosystems and game-specific operational requirements.

The special invite and solidarity slot allocations for selected titles include:

Chess: 5 special, 2 solidarity

EA Sports FC: 5 special, 2 solidarity

PUBG Mobile: 4 special, 1 solidarity

Honor of Kings: 1 special, 1 solidarity

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves: 1 special, 1 solidarity

Rocket League: 2 solidarity

All remaining titles, excluding Counter-Strike 2, will have 1 solidarity slot by default.

“The growth of esports depends on creating opportunities for talent to emerge from every corner of the world,” said Faisal bin Homran, chief product officer at the Esports Foundation.

“Through the Esports Nations Cup and the introduction of host nation slots for GCC member states, we are expanding regional representation and creating new pathways for players to compete internationally.

“Our goal is to elevate competition, inspire long-term development, strengthen national esports ecosystems and give more players the opportunity to represent their countries on the global stage, while helping to showcase the region’s talent and accelerating the growth of gaming and esports across MENA (the Middle East and North Africa) and the GCC.”

Recipients of wildcard slots will receive full travel and accommodation support and compete under the same player-experience framework as all other qualified teams and players at the finals.

The inaugural Esports Nations Cup will take place in Riyadh from Nov. 2 to Nov. 29.
