- Hadi, who led the country through years of political upheaval and civil war, died at his residence in Riyadh
LONDON/DUBAI: King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have offered their condolences to Yemen on the death of former president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who died aged 80 on Thursday.
The former president of Yemen, who led the country through years of political upheaval and civil war, died at his residence in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
Hadi, a former military commander from southern Yemen, served for nearly two decades as deputy to longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh before becoming president in 2012 following Saleh’s resignation.
During his presidency, Hadi oversaw a turbulent transitional period marked by constitutional reform efforts, political unrest, and the growing conflict with the Iran-aligned Houthi militia.
In 2022, Hadi transferred his presidential powers to an eight-member leadership council headed by Rashad Al-Alimi as part of efforts to advance peace negotiations and end the country’s devastating civil war.
